A biohacker should have a smart desk. It is necessary not only for comfort, but also for health and to increase the efficiency of work. In this article I will tell you about my example.
I have a desk that is adjustable in height. So I can work on it both standing and sitting. It is very useful to alternate periodically. It looks like this:
I know many of you will exclaim: “How so? He’s telling us to work standing up!”. No, I’m not urging you to be categorical at all, saying that work standing only or work sitting only. It’s just that there are studies that show the benefits of working standing and sitting. And from my own experience, I think the best solution is to work both ways.
I work at a smart desk alternating periods. Ideally I see it like this: “30 minutes standing, then 30 minutes sitting” and so on. But of course taking breaks from work. You can also set up a rule so that the desk automatically goes up and down once in a certain period. And if you’re not the only one working at the table, you can save profiles of different people, so the desk automatically adjusted to your height.
If you are passionate about biohacking and want to become a full-fledged biohacker, I advise you to choose a desk that is adjustable both sitting and standing, where you can work both ways.
I will also tell you that for both ways of working, you need to have the monitor at eye level. From this point of view, it is harmful to work for a laptop for a long time. So in addition to the standing/sitting alternation, I also try to work more at the iMac, which is at eye level. And I work on my laptop mostly sitting down, if I’m in the living room, in another city, or out of town, in the country.
Sometimes I do absolutely unhealthy things – I work lying down at the notebook. But I do it if I have to work, but don’t feel like it. But to work for a short time at the laptop in a semi-reclining condition is the lesser of two evils for me. After all, I, like you, am not a robot. Of course we all try to be as efficient and productive as possible, but the reality is that this is not always the case. And even biohackers can eat junk food and work in a not-so-healthy posture.
It is very important for a biohacker to choose not only the right height of the desk and the posture in which he works, but also to choose furniture with comfortable features. What might they be? Yes, all sorts. I have a built-in charger in my desk. I put my phone on the desk and it starts charging (the wireless charging function is usually already present in most modern smartphones of the latest models).
Also, my biohacker desk has a built-in power outlet, a pencil case under the table, a special compartment for hiding wires, and a USB input for charging devices. There is also a heater – this is useful for those who drink tea or coffee and to keep your drink from getting cold.
As for the choice of a particular model of desk. I am not in the business of advertising, and I will not recommend anyone in particular here. I will only say that on the Internet there are many websites where you can buy such tables. You simply need to type in a search box “desk for standing work”. You can either buy a ready-made set or, like a construction set, build a desk for yourself, choosing colors, height adjustment, color and functionality.
What is the purpose of all this?
The main purpose of such desk is to increase your efficiency and productivity. So that you are not distracted by wires and such a desk helps to keep your desk clean.
Also, my desk is oversized in both width and length. So my desk fits everything. It is a pleasure to work, even 2 people can fit on the table at the same time!
Now for the cost. I bought my biohacker desk last year and it cost me $1300. Not cheap. What to do if you are not ready to invest in your desk so much money? You can order furniture cheaper, with no additional features, but only with a standing function and height adjustment.
In the context of our biohacking theme, this is the most important thing. As long as it goes up and down, even without automation. It is the most important for your health – so that you alternate your mode of work.
There is an even cheaper option: if the room allows it, then order two tables: one for working while standing and the other for sitting. Such tables even individually are usually cheaper, because the production of ready-made tables in many organizations already established and the cost of their low, which can not be said about the tables with adjustable. All the same, stand and sit desks are still a novelty for many countries.
