Today I decided to write an unusual post about psychology. It will be completely… in pictures!
Sometimes you look around and think: “How quickly things change!”. It seems like not so long ago I was bragging to my friends about a new VCR, then a walkman, then a pager, and now everyone has a smartphone with incredible features in their pocket. Fashion, style, music, art, social media – everything changes very quickly. Who knows where the winds of trends will take them!
However, in this age of great change, something remains unchanged. It’s us, the people! Because society does not really change over time, only its habits do.
That’s exactly what I was thinking about when I was doing a material on the comics of the famous Herluf Bidstrup. This Danish painter was born in 1912 and was especially popular in the middle of the last century. He is remembered worldwide for his thousands of vivid caricatures. But what is more incredible: even after so many years have passed, everything he drew then is still relevant today!
Instant photos are now really instantaneous, but it is still problematic to get a shot that a woman will like.
I remember when I was a little boy, I was given a book of Bidstrup cartoons while visiting relatives, and I disappeared for a couple of hours. First of all, they were the first comics I had ever read in my life. Secondly, I was blown away by how subtle his sense of satire was.
Drawings by H. Bidstrup (here and below) / Fair Use.
Many of Herluf Bidstrup’s caricatures are 50-70 years old, but they are still not outdated. The painter loved to show human nature in his funny black-and-white drawings: our weaknesses, phobias, desires. And, you know, in that respect, we haven’t really changed since the last century. We love to gossip, spy on the neighbors, we love the attention of the opposite sex. Some are constantly unsure of themselves, while others, on the contrary, are full of confidence (often unfounded).
The heirs near the deathbed.
Bidstrup himself lived a long, colorful life. He was the son of a house painter, so he drew from childhood and received an excellent art education. However, while his friends were looking for themselves in abstractionism, Herluf was drawing people in comic situations. Some thought he was wasting his talent, but eventually it was his wonderful sense of humor that made the painter world famous.
I don’t want a great painter to be forgotten. That’s why I made a small selection of Bidstrup’s coolest works.
